Fried quail eggs – Night Market, Kad Suan Kaew

We stumbled on a night market at Kad Suan Kaew shopping centre on Friday evening. It assembled in front of our eyes late in the afternoon and by dusk was in full swing. The choice of food there was rather mind boggling and definitely authentical Thai.

As a starter, we had a grilled Pla Nin (tilapia) served with Nam Prik Pla Tu น้ำพริกปลาทู , which was roasted eggplant (aubergine) mashed together with fermented shrimp paste, garlic, chili and coriander. The silky and sweet eggplant was nicely balanced by the pungent fermented shrimp paste and rounded out with garlic, which also helped control the fishiness. A perfect condiment for the grilled fish.

We also had a mushroom omelette baked in banana leaves to whet our appetites before going for some noodles.

Julia wanted to try the Khanom Jin Nam Ngiao ขนมจีนน้ำเงี้ยว, Chinese rice noodles in a spicy broth thickened with pork blood and served with cubes of pork blood, topped with chopped green shallots, corianders, fried garlic, and take with bean sprouts, finely sliced pickled Chinese mustard, pork crackling and fried dried chilli. Not bad, especially since I love offal! Not really to Julia’s taste though 😛

I selected the Khao Soi ข้าวซอย with chicken. It’s a Muslim-influenced curry served over flat egg noodles and topped with squiggly fried noodles which soak up the curry and perfectly!

We completed our dinner with some sago dumplings filled with pork, peanuts and 大头菜 preserved mustard stems, a nice equilibrise of sweet and savoury with a chewy skin. These are ingested wrapped with some lettuce and a sprig coriander. Very light but very tasty!

What really is Search Engine Optimization?
search engines
Search engines are smart, but they still need help. It’s that simple.

The World wide web is a bottomless well of content. Between blogs, ecommerce sites, news sites, social networks, images, videos and on and on, it can be difficult for a search engine to find a business website when a consumer is ready to make a purchase. This is where a well-optimized website comes into play.

Madame Tussauds Sydney, Australia: Captain Cook sails into Darling Harbour to track the Transit of Venus

Captain Cook sails into Darling Harbour to track the Transit of Venus…

Madame Tussauds Sydney enjoyed having Captain Cook get waxed at Sydney’s Madame Tussauds in Darling Harbour primeval this morning.

Captain Cook is one of many Australian icons to be announced as attractions to appear in the museum, which will eventually feature more than 70 wax figures.

He joins a massive contingent of Australian sportspeople, politicians and stars in the million tourist attraction.

Merlin Entertainment Australia director Edward Fuller isn’t revealing which other Australian stars have been selected for the local exhibition, but he has stated extensive research has been done to ensure the right mix of the famous and infamous.

"The key thing is that there will be a really strong line-up of local stars," Mr Fuller said.

A team of artists is working furiously to have the sculptures ready in time for the opening. Each wax model requires about 20 artists, from sculptors to painters, and can take up to six months to complete.

"The hair is all individually inserted into the head," Mr Fuller said, adding that capturing the "character and atmosphere" of the subject was the artists’ goal.

To assist in this, many of the celebrities immortalised by Madam Tussauds’ artists donate their own clothes to help create a sense of authenticity.

"That’s the freezing on the cake," Mr Fuller said.

"Not only can you get up close and individualized to your favourite star but they’re actually wearing the clothes they might have turned up to the Oscars in."

The Transit of Venus – when the planet Venus transits crossways the grappling of the sun – is a very rare occurrence that Captain saint Cook tracked from island in 1769, leading him to eventually map the whole East coast of Australia.

Since the phenomena was first recognized, there have only been six transits of Venus with the most current one occurring in 2004 and the one following June 6th 2012 to occur on 11th December 2117.

WHAT: Relive the adventure with Captain saint Cook who is returning to Sydney Harbour in a Red
Rocket for another viewing of the Transit of Venus, and the last for 105 years.

How to Make a Professional Website
Here are the resources I use: www.sidewages.com/resources/

Why Go Pro?
– needed to succeed in online commerce
– garner trust in the market-space
– become the dominance for your topic
– more people = help more = more resources

What I Don’t Mean By Pro
– super-duper programming gurus not needed
– look good, but not super-awesome
– refrain the 1997 animated GIF website

Clarity of Content
– tell visitors what it’s about
– refrain all instances of confusion
– text & images need to be relevant

The First Thing They See
– the logo should make sense
– the headline should tell the story
– think about a subheadline for details

Be Careful with Your Text
– be concise
– be clear and summarize
– use headings
– use bulleted lists

Navigation is Key
– grant your visitors to move around
– simple = happy; complex = gone
– multiple specific pages
– not just one huge page
– a sitemap is a must
– links have to work

Templates Are Awesome
– ready-made templates can save time
– there are plenty freebies available
– there as some really nice paid-ones, too
– structure is usually tried & true

Go Forth and Be Professional
– aim for professional
– know that bootstrapped is still okay
– I recommend WordPress
– free themes to get started
– you can’t break anything

Broadway Photo’s Sheisty-Looking Business Addresses – Consumerist The Consumerist is out with a post this day on Broadway Pic and their related businesses.

Here’s a snippet from why they have an unsatisfactory report with the BBB.

"Please comprehend that complaints might concern more than one issue

Vincent Ferrari
, a blogger and friend, decided to go out and actually take pictures of the various locations on record with the BBB for Broadway pic and in addition to the shot above, click through to the Consumerist to see more.

I, of course, had my own infamous run in with another one of these sleazy retailers, PriceRitePhoto (now operating as Barclay’s Photo) a tiny over a year ago.

Sleazy camera retailers, unfortunately, are nothing new and seem to preserve despite the attempts on our part to shed light on the cockroaches.

But one of the things that really bothers me is that somehow these sleazy companies seem to make it back on the shopping search engines over and over and over again.

After I wrote my post on PriceRitePhoto, perhaps the most trafficked post of all time on sleazy camera retailers resulting in stories in the NY Post, NY Times, the top Dugg story of 2005, boing boing, Slashdot, and hundreds of blogs, PriceRitePhoto was healthy to change their study and get right back on Yahoo! Shoppping within three months.

Subsequently when I pointed this out in another blog post they were dropped from Yahoo! Shopping again.

But this day when I go and look up Broadway Photo, the pic store with an unsatisfactory BBB rating and the complaints listed above, guess what? Yep, not only are they on Yahoo! Shopping but they are listed as a three star merchant. How does a company with an unsatisfactory BBB rating, hundreds of complaints with the BBB healthy to get a three star rating? And with product reviews on Yahoo like this:

"Buyer beware!!!!!! False advertising on product inquired. What was shown on web site was not the real total product expected. Upon calling for confirmation, product advertised wasn’t acquirable but was for an inferior version of the same product that you have to purchase extra accessories that normally are included in the advertised product. Sales mortal would insist of purchasing extras that would diddley up the price of the order. Very dissapointed!"

Flickr, by the way, recently instituted this "cool" new "camera finder" feature where they will send you directly to Yahoo Shopping to purchase your camera. That sucks.

I’m sure this will be taken down by the time I get this post up (I did take screen shots though and can always share those later) but try this. Go to Flickr’s camera finder for the Fuji FinePix S9100. Now click through and sort by price. Who has the lowest price? Yep, you guessed it, Broadway Photo. Thanks Flickr, thanks Yahoo.

Take this advice if you want to purchase a camera. AVOID YAHOO SHOPPING. AVOID Flickr’s camera finder. Instead go to B&H Photo, Amazon.com, Costco, or a local retailer where you can achievement into their store and trust them. I comprehend that Yahoo needs to monetize their social networks, but this is NOT the way to do it.

Although Yahoo Shopping might not bear a legal responsibility to prevent bad merchants from getting on their site, they bear a moral responsibility to do at least a modicum of due diligence before letting someone like Broadway on board.

Quoting Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Vought OS2U-3 Kingfisher:

The Kingfisher was the U.S. Navy’s primary ship-based, scout and attending aircraft during World War II. Revolutionary spot welding techniques gave it a smooth, non-buckling fuselage structure. Deflector plate flaps that hung from the wing’s trailing edge and spoiler-augmented ailerons functioned like extra flaps to grant slower landing speeds. Most OS2Us operated in the Pacific, where they rescued many downed airmen, including World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker and the crew of his B-17 Flying Fortress.

In March 1942, this airplane was assigned to the battleship USS Indiana. It later underwent a six-month overhaul in California, returned to Pearl Harbor, and rejoined the Indiana in March 1944. Lt. j.g. Rollin M. Batten Jr. was awarded the Navy Cross for making a daring rescue in this airplane under heavy enemy fire on July 4, 1944.

Quoting Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Boeing B-29 Superfortress "Enola Gay":

Boeing’s B-29 Superfortress was the most sophisticated propeller-driven bomber of World War II and the first bomber to home its crew in pressurized compartments. Even though designed to fight in the European theater, the B-29 found its niche on the other side of the globe. In the Pacific, B-29s delivered a variety of aerial weapons: conventional bombs, incendiary bombs, mines, and two nuclear weapons.

On August 6, 1945, this Martin-built B-29-45-MO dropped the first atomic weapon used in combat on Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later, Bockscar (on display at the U.S. Air Force Museum near Dayton, Ohio) dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. Enola Gay flew as the advance weather reconnaissance aircraft that day. A third B-29, The Great Artiste, flew as an attending aircraft on both missions.

Nose Hill Park, Calgary, AB

The sun set against the backdrop of the snow-capped Rockies. A couple were silhouetted against the moon as it rose to the east. As they headed back to the parking lot they passed a small herd of deer who seemed to be undisturbed by their presence. At the top of the hill we could see the University of Calgary campus below and off to the west we could see the monster houses in Edgemont. Back at the parking lot we noticed another nest where one of Calgary’s homeless takes refuge at nightfall.

Suburban growth in Calgary nearly encircled Nose Hill Park by the late 1980s.

December 2007:
Schmap is the latest of the web 2.0 technologies that heighten my connectivity on the Internet. One of my Creative Commons Flickr pictures of Calgary’s Nose Hill Park was picked up by Schmap through Flickr’s powerful Search Engine Optimized tagging tools – folksonomy for Flickr pic folks. We were planning a trip to the 12 Days of Christmas at Calgary’ Heritage Park. As I use Schmap to prepare for our outing this weekend, I feel somewhat like a 2.0 volunteer in my newly-adopted city.

This pic was selected by Schmap to highlight some of the ideal places to visit in Calgary, Alberta our newly-adopted city. Schmap provides free digital travel guides for 200 destinations throughout the United States, Europe, Canada (with Calgary as one of its highlighted cities), Australia and New Zealand.
