How do you make a nonsquare website icon?

Question by AV2247: How do you make a nonsquare website icon?
With a site like the tiny picture that appears on the side of the address bar or in the journalism is tomato-shaped, not a tomato with a square white background (same with the Gmail envelope). How do you design an picture like this? Further, is there any way to make icons that have empty space in them? I.e. icons that are not geometric shapes and would seem to be written on top of the journalism ?

I would guess just make the background transparent rather than solid.

edit: either that or just make the background the same gray color as the tabs so it appears as though it’s not there.

  1. This is entirely possible; all you need to do is create an icon file with a transparent background. Use an image editing program to do this (GIMP or Photoshop work well). Save the image as a GIF or PNG, with a transparent background (there are many tutorials online regarding how to create an image with background transparency). You can create shapes, use letters, or design anything. (You probably already know this, but stick to 32×32 pixel dimensions at the largest.)

After you save the file as a GIF or PNG, you can upload that to your website and point the favourite icon code to the location of the file. Hope this helps!
